The University of Hong Kong (HKU) received four awards today (December 14) in the MiC Achievement Ceremony 2022.

The HKU Wong Chuk Hang Student Residence Site received the Outstanding MiC Project Award. Professor Wei Pan, Executive Director of the HKU Centre for Innovation in Construction and Infrastructure Development (CICID), and Director of Estates of HKU Ir K.L. Tam both received the Outstanding People (MiC Advocator) Award. Dr Louis Chu, Project Director of Wong Chuk Hang Student Residence Site, received the MiC Project Champion (Outstanding Project Team Members) Award.

The ceremony was held during the International Conference on MiC (Modular Integrated Construction) with an aim to recognise outstanding local projects, project teams, MiC advocators and practitioners for their contributions in the promotion and adoption of MiC that bring about innovation to improve productivity, quality, sustainability and safety of the construction industry. 

The International Conference on MiC was co-organised by the Development Bureau of the HKSAR Government, the Construction Industry Council (CIC), and the Centre of Science and Technology Industrial Development (CSTID) of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People's Republic of China.

Professor Wei Pan – Outstanding People (MiC Advocator)
Professor Wei Pan was awarded the “MiC Outstanding People (MiC Advocator)”. Professor Pan is Executive Director of the HKU Centre for Innovation in Construction and Infrastructure Development (CICID). He formally introduced the modular construction approach to Hong Kong in Spring 2017, and co-created the concept of “modular integrated construction (MiC)” with the Development Bureau of the HKSAR Government. MiC has been adopted in the Chief Executive’s Policy Address every year since 2017. Professor Pan provided theory, methodology and guidance to support the “0-to-1” MiC creation. He has also made significant contributions to the “1-to-∞” MiC adoption by leading cutting-edge research on higher-rise, higher-density, higher-tech and higher-co-creation development of MiC, organising numerous knowledge exchange activities from which the government and industry have benefited, providing systematic solutions and advice for MiC projects’ planning, design, delivery and measurement, and encouraging MiC supply chains regionally and globally.

Ir K.L. Tam – Outstanding People (MiC Advocator)
Ir K.L. Tam was awarded the “MiC Outstanding People (MiC Advocator)”. Ir Tam is the Director of Estates of HKU, who works closely with various Government departments in the promotion of MiC development in Hong Kong. He is also the Fellow of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and Honorary President of the Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers, whose contributions to MiC are well acknowledged throughout Hong Kong’s construction industry. Ir Tam is one of the pioneers in implementing MiC in HKU, and there have been two ongoing university construction projects using the MiC approach and another one in the planning stage.

Dr Louis Chu – MiC Project Champion (Outstanding Project Team Members)
Dr Louis Chu was awarded the “MiC Project Champion (Outstanding Project Team Members)”. Dr Chu is the project director for HKU Wong Chuk Hang Student Residence Site, who has contributed his construction knowledge by combining his understanding of the manufacturing process to lead the team forward. Dr Chu led his team of consultants to seek the Buildings Department’s approval and developed an innovative MiC-Ready strategy at the tendering stage. He also initiated MiC briefings to minimise the uncertainties for tenderers, achieving greater cost savings.

HKU Wong Chuk Hang Student Residence Site – Outstanding MiC Project
The HKU Wong Chuk Hang Student Residence Site won the “Outstanding MiC Projects” award. The Wong Chuk Hang Student Residence is one of the pilot MiC projects nominated by the Development Bureau, providing a total of 1,224 hostel places with a total of 952 MiC modules. The project is targeted to be completed by the second quarter of the year 2023. The project has also fully supported HKU research teams in developing MiC supply chain and smart MiC management systems, and establishing various MiC standards for applications in Hong Kong.

The University of Hong Kong spares no effort to continuously drive innovation and support the sustainable development and betterment of the construction industry through smart and modular construction.
